General Statement of Duties:

Provides mental health skills-building services to individual consumers with serious and persistent mental illness. Serves as part of an integrated team providing a variety of field-based services. Works with a small caseload of individuals who receive frequent and intensive assistance in community living settings.  Services are based on a proactive field-based approach and require a strong team orientation, flexibility, and creativity. This position reports to the Supervisor of Mental Health Skill-building; supervision is provided for this position weekly, with other consultation as needed. Should this position be filled by a registered nurse, duties will include nursing/medical functions for which medical credentials are required.

Persons in this position are classified non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Major Essential Functions:

Provides goal directed interventions that provide training to individuals who have serious and persistent mental illness so that they can reside independently in their communities in the least restrictive environment.

Makes and documents face-to-face contacts, generally in consumers’ natural environments. Must deliver appropriate share of services to achieve agency productivity targets.

Writes individual service plans that focus on consumer’s skills-development needs in order to function in the community; secures input from the consumer and other team members.

Helps consumers acquire basic skills in symptom management and adherence to psychiatric treatment plans.

Assists consumers in developing medication adherence skills

Helps consumers acquire basic functional skills and appropriate behavior related to the

individual’s health and safety.

Helps consumers with individualized training in development and appropriate use of social skills and personal support system.

Assists consumers with skills for improved  personal hygiene.

Helps consumers with skills in food preparation.

Assists consumers with skills for money management.

Mental Health Skills-building Worker Hourly Position

Collaborates fully with medical staff to facilitate prescription, administration, dispensing, and monitoring of medications. Coordinates delivery of medications to consumers’ natural environment, as appropriate.

Maintains detailed documentation that is commensurate with requirements for Medicaid reimbursement.

Makes effective use of available technology, including, but not limited to, voice mail, e-mail, electronic medical record system, and other computer resources.

Maintains effective relationships with co-workers and customers based on courtesy, compassion, and respect.

Performs other duties as assigned in conformance with established operational policies and procedures.

If incumbent is a registered nurse, duties will also include nursing services such as nursing assessments, monitoring medication side effects, administration of medication, blood levels, and/or other nursing functions commensurate with the incumbent’s credentials.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of mental health community support and independent living skills training; thorough knowledge of mental illness and its treatment; knowledge of mental health and substance abuse interventions; thorough knowledge of crisis intervention/emergency techniques; demonstrated ability to work effectively with consumers in non-office-based service settings; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse individuals, including consumers, professionals, and family members; knowledge of and adherence to basic ethics appropriate for a helping relationship; ability to write concisely and effectively; skills in maintaining accurate and detailed service logs; excellent interpersonal skills; demonstrated good judgment; ability to respond to after-hours needs in timely manner. Basic computer literacy and word processing skills required.

Additional Requirement:

Possession of a current valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in human services or related specialty, plus one year of experience working with adult mental health clients. Must meet the requirements to be eligible for certified as a Qualified Mental Health Professional Adult if not already certified as a QMHP-A.

If the position is filled by a registered nurse, the following requirements apply: Graduation from an accredited college or nursing school with a nursing degree, current license as an RN in the Commonwealth of Virginia, plus two years experience working with mental health clients.

Mental Health Skills-building Worker (Position #9061)

Work Environment: Community settings (homes, workplaces, shelters, streets) with highly variable work environments. General office environment with normal lighting, temperature, air quality, ventilation and noise levels. Vehicle.

Work Location: 1241 North Main Street, Harrisonburg; variety of community settings, mostly within Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.

Work Hazards: Hazards associated with working in variety of community situations, the characteristics of which may be difficult to predict. Hazards associated with working alone in community settings.  Standard hazards associated with a mental health treatment environment including hazards associated with problem behaviors. Use of universal precautions required.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, office hours set based on consumer need and team coverage requirements.
