What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1 in 68 children have been identified with ASD. Early identification of ASD is important in order to develop effective supports. Your pediatrician can begin the diagnostics process by completing a developmental checklist at your next appointment. Screening for ASD can typically begin at 18 months.
